The Sydney Alliance has welcomed a reported commitment by the NSW Government to spend “hundreds of millions of dollars” on social housing in next month’s state budget.
Treasurer Dominic Perrottet was quoted in media reports on October 10 as indicating there would be “direct spending on infrastructure to create jobs” and that maintaining social and affordable housing would create jobs and have a “positive impact on society”.
The Sydney Alliance, a broad partnership of not-for-profit organisations across Greater Sydney, has welcomed the comments in light of their campaign since 2015 for reforms to achieve better social and affordable housing for people on lower incomes.
Says Magnus Linder, co-chair of the Sydney Alliance Housing campaign team:
“This could not come at a better time, with people on lower incomes across NSW suffering terribly from job losses and health impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic.
“In light of the failure of the recent federal budget to commit to any increased spending on social housing, we’re encouraged to hear Mr Perrottet stressing the importance of NSW innovations to ‘fill in the gaps’ to help the people of this state.
“This is a huge priority, given the need to keep people housed in healthy and safe conditions, and to create jobs in construction which can give people a foundation for rebuilding their lives.
“We look forward to discussions with the NSW government as to how this can best be achieved.”
